Programming Competition / Lynx Game Jam

Hello! Welcome to our programming competitions / Lynx game jams page! This is a regular event that Atari Lynx Vault holds to encourage new game development for Atari Lynx. This event runs annually starting in the last week of November and ending in mid December.

If you're interested in making a game or demo for the Atari Lynx, enter one of our game jams and show off your skills!

Please check our sister website, Atari Lynx Developer Resources for programming resources, tutorials and various other tools.

All of the submitted games are available for download here - Game Jam ROM Pack Downloads.

Below is the list of current and past programming competitions that we have ran...

2022 - LynxJam 2022

This game jam was hosted on itch.io - LynXjam 2022

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to make an Atari Lynx mini-game within the next 22 days, to have fun and put a smile on players' faces. This is an unranked jam and we encourage collaboration and showing off your skills, but above all to have fun making a new mini-game.

The emphasis here is on mini. A single screen game would be perfect, but you can also go with scrolling if you like. There's only so much time to make your game, so use it wisely and keep it simple.

This year's theme is... Make a game that pokes fun at various pranks, activities, or challenges that have gone viral on social media. To get your mind going, here's a list of ideas you can steal or borrow from:

Beer chugging extravaganza

  • Flash a stranger on an escalator (NSFW)
  • Gifting forward at a coffee shop
  • Swatting
  • Delivery parcel thief
  • Planking in public places
  • Extreme ironing
  • Hock a loogie
  • Spicy chilli eating
  • Burning dog poo on a porch
  • Ice bucket challenge

Think of your game as a single event from California Games, and if you need further inspiration, watch this video...California Games 2018 (NES) - Fictional Bad Games.

You must -

  • Have fun ☺️
  • Submit ROMs in the following formats: LNX, LYX and BLL O file (the LNX and LYX ROMs must run in an emulator as well as on real Lynx hardware)
  • Not violate any copyrights or trademarks

Your game must -

  • Follow the theme of this jam
  • Not access or load extra data from cart, practically this means it has to be less than ~50KB
  • Not use EEPROM or SD card for saving
  • Reference "LynXjam 2022" in your game's title/loading screen
  • Be playable i.e. demos or broken submissions will be disqualified

This year's theme is "Let's make something scary". So dig up your bodies, pull out the skeletons from the closet, unleash the monsters, spill some (pixelated) blood and maybe have a witch or two fly by. Let's make it the best scary game jam so far!

  • Be a single screen game, but can have a separate screen for intro, menu, credits, etc.

2020 - Lynx 2020 Programming Competition - Future

This year's theme is "Future", but that's future with a twist. Think about how the future would have been imagined back in the 1990s when this console was new. Think of the retro movie posters and the games at the time and imagine them 50 years forward. Flying cars, space exploration, living on the moon, visiting other planets, intelligent robots, blasters and mind control, plus many other wonderful things that were yet to come. We're talking about what the 2040s would look like if you were living in the 90s.
